As you know by now I love to travel and I love to eat, there is nothing better than sitting down to a great meal and savouring the experience! I wanted to share with everyone my restaurant recommendations from southern Spain which I have aptly named ‘Spanish Delights’.
La Solana and El Higueron. Both restaurants deserve recognition for their fabulous food, service and ambiance. As my family and I were in Spain over the Christmas period I had pre arranged some of our meals due to worrying it would be a busy time and to take the stress out of the trip for all!
La Solana Restaurant is a real favourite, I have eaten here before on previous trips (a few times in fact!! See previous post) and each time it still offers such a high standard of cuisine with a real homely touch. The restaurant is based in Fuengirola on Avda Ramon y Cajal 22 and is ran by a husband and wife who welcome you into their restaurant as if you are a friend or family member!! When we arrived on our first night in Spain, we were kindly greeted and chatted as if we had seen each other last week not last year. I like the personal touch they offer all their customers. The menu offers such a good choice for all, fresh fish, meat and specials. Before you even order you are brought a selection of delicious treats consisting of pastry parcels that melt in your mouth and a small shot glass of tomato yumminess! The specials are given to you on a small board and explained what is in each dish or if it is a fish for example you haven’t heard of before, you are given an idea of what its like such a meaty or smoked etc. It is all about going that extra step to give the customer the great experience.
I decided to opt for the Iberian meat wrapped in pastry on a creamy mashed potato bed to start, it was AMAZING! It is something I would never normally choose, the meat was so tender wrapped in the light pastry with a delicious sauce delicately drizzled on the side. Alongside your starters you get warmed bread rolls with oil, the oil was so good I had to take the name and go find some for home… You are then given a shot of an assortment of fruit, vegetables and herbs to cleanse your palate, which is lovely. For main I had the Duck breast with a raspberry coulis, shiitake mushrooms and vegetables, the flavour was delicious and the duck was sliced so thin and cooked just right. I devoured it with such pleasure! Pudding or dessert as some may say is my favourite part of any meal, due to my sweet tooth. I ordered Red Velvet sponge cake with raspberry foam, all I need to say is so YUMMY. Price wise La Solana is reasonable for the standard and quality of food you receive, a three course meal with drinks and coffee was 45 euros per person. We enjoyed it so much, we went back on our last evening. It is a must visit if you are in southern Spain and I will look forward to future visits to La Solana. Open everyday bar Monday, 1-3 pm and 7.30-11pm.
El Higueron Restaurant was a first time visit for us, we have stayed in the resort of El Higueron on a few occasions but never ate here. It is situated at the top of the hill off the main motorway A7 road, at Autovia de la Costa del Sol, Salida 217, Fuengirola. With amazing views of the Spanish coastline day or night, it has the perfect setting. I was very excited to try this restaurant!
On entering the staff were very friendly and attentive, the menu has a great selection of dishes that offers real traditional Spanish fare (Asturias dishes from northern Spain) and it certainly tickles your tastebuds. The interior was in keeping with the Mediterranean and Spanish feel, with wooden tables, doors and terracotta walls. It was spacious with plenty of seating and rooms where you could enjoy private dining. There is an outdoor terrace for the summer months that would be fabulous to enjoy a meal on. I would recommend it for a special occasion and as it was Christmas Day’s night, ‘Feliz Navidad’, we had plenty to celebrate!!
I ordered the Spider Crab cake au gratin to begin and the portion size was large, enough for two people as you got two spider crab cakes with a dish of melba toasts. My mum and I wished we had shared the dish. The spider crab was beautiful, so tasty and smooth, you could see it was full of meaty crab. Alongside you were given hot breads and a blue cheese spread that was gorgeous!! I was worried I would be full after my starter. For main I shared the special for two people with my mum, Asturian Yearling Sirlion, which we had with potato gratin with parmesan cheese and sautéed vegetables in soy sauce. The meat was so lean and absolutely delicious, the accompaniments went so well alongside and were full of flavour. I could just eat it again now thinking about it! No one else had any room for dessert, bar myself. I am sure I have a separate stomach for sweet treats, I went for the Chocolate Brownie with walnuts warmed with a vanilla ice cream and it was divine! It was rich with lovely big chunks of walnuts within and the vanilla ice cream was a perfect partner to the brownie. El Higueron Restaurant offers great food with excellent portions, I was thrilled with my meal and my family thought it was an excellent choice for our Christmas meal. Price wise it was 55 euros for a three course meal with coffee and drinks. If you are wanting to celebrate an occasion or have a special meal whilst on holiday, book here! Enjoy. Open everyday from 9.30 am till 11 pm.
Christmas in Spain was a real highlight for many reasons, spending time with my family and enjoying some milder warm weather and the food was definitely one of them. I certainly would recommend booking both restaurants beforehand if you wish to go, to avoid disappointment!
