Whist in Marrakech we enjoyed a stay in a riad. A first for me, but certainly not the last! The riad of choice was called Riad Tizwa, located in Derb Gueraba. A short walk from the Place Jemaa El Fna. Riad Tizwa Marrakech is a lovely Moroccan home, that is located within the walls of the Medina (old town). It sleeps 12-14 people with 6 double rooms, all different in style. Built on three floors overlooking a beautiful open courtyard beneath.
As soon as I stepped into Riad Tizwa I felt at home. Our room was room 2 on the top of the house, a perfect location. The room has double doors that open onto the roof terrace, which in itself is large. With two snug areas that are covered over should you want some refuge from the heat or a little nap! 4 sun loungers to take full advantage of the Moroccan sun, each sun bed comes with a straw hat to protect you from the sun’ strong rays, I liked this extra touch!!
Once settled in we ventured onto the terrace for a relaxing afternoon, traditional mint tea was served inclusive of your room rate, any other drinks you require don’t hesitate to ask their friendly and welcoming staff in the riad. One of the many positives about Riad Tizwa is you are left uninterrupted to enjoy your time here, even though we weren’t the only people staying here you feel like its your own private home and instantly relax.
After an enjoyable evening in the Medina, we rested well in the comfortable surroundings of room 2 and star gazed from outside the room’ doors.
Another nice touch are the leather slippers and tasselled robes provided for guests of the riad and the selection of Moroccan toiletries given to use. Such as the solid deodorant bar, face mask and the orange flower oil.
Breakfast is served at whatever time you wish and wherever you wish to eat it. We chose under the canopy on the roof terrace late morning. The spread was fresh, filling and flavoursome! Granola, fresh fruits, juice, pastries & yogurt. I especially loved the homemade vanilla yogurt…
Unlike most places you stay whether it be a hotel or apartment check in and check out times always seem so regimented, not at Riad Tizwa. We were kindly informed on booking that we should feel free to arrive earlier than 2 pm and after breakfast on our day of departure we again were told to relax and stay into the afternoon if we so wished. Which we did! I never wanted to leave.
On reflection I look back on my stay at Riad Tizwa with great joy. The stay was refreshing and relaxing, even though you are within the Medina walls, Riad Tizwa is a home away from home ridding you are your day to day stresses. Currently wishing I was still there and already planning my return! This is a place for all, young and old, add it to your travel to do list you won’t regret it.
