Giving lockdown the chop! @ Go Ape Matfen

Wondering what to do as lockdown eases? We were, but we wanted to do something different within a safe setting. Why not try your hand at axe throwing! What a wonderful idea, sign us up. Go Ape @ Matfen are offering you that incredible opportunity, for 15 pounds per person for an hour. It’s brilliant and brand spanking new, perfect to let out all that lockdown lethargy… Head for the outdoors and open air, social distancing at it’s best, whilst learning a new skill along the way. Unleashing your inner warrior along the way. When will you axe to try this?

Adam and I were super excited to try out the axe throwing, so last weekend we made our way to Matfen after being kindly gifted this experience by Go Ape Newcastle. We arrived full of enthusiasm and eager to begin. Matty took the session after we read the rules and checked in swiftly online. Starting with a safety briefing and making sure we were all aware of our surroundings, we began to get to grips with our own axe which we all personally named. Mine became Sam the Slayer and Adam’s The Chancer Stoddart. Firstly we took a series of axe throws to become more comfortable and used to it, as we were given helpful and handy tips to improve our throw. We began with a one handed throw, then onto a two handed depending on how comfortable you felt to which you preferred to use. After awhile we moved onto a competition with each other, where each part of the target carried certain points. All scores were added at the end to declare the winner! It was such fun throwing the axes and as there were 6 of us participating we enjoyed the competitive spirit plus the camaraderie of the occasion. An excellent escape from the past few months of mundane life in lockdown, a sense of normality never felt so good with sun shining down on us.

As time progressed we moved onto the third throw, a reverse throw and our second competition AXE. Which meant after each throw you missed you received a letter until you had the three and were out. Adam became the victor overall and enjoyed becoming the very first Axe Champion of the day. I gracefully accepted defeat and owned my loser status haha. For anyone fancying some fun and wanting to enjoy a little light relief from current circumstance, in a socially distanced environment outdoors, then this is for you!! You can have up to eight people in each axe throwing area and there are two sections available to hire. Time to axe yourself not where but when?! Enjoy and it’s extremely good exercise too.

Alongside the Axe Throwing Arena you can also take part in the famous TreeTop Challenge, try out your best Tarzan impression as you zip line through the trees. Check out the Go Ape website for more information and to book your own axe throwing or tree top challenge session. Read all about our past experiences @ Go Ape
